It’s no secret that these days a lot of us live in an extreme state of disconnection, separated from our own bodies, our inner selves, communities, families, food sources, and land underfoot. Corpo Terra was conceived and created to help tip the balance the other way and provide a time and a space for us to reconnect with the natural world, with ourselves, and the creative and expressive spirit that exists within each one of us. We believe that music and dance is deep medicine that can heal, uplift and empower an individual and a community. For 5 days we will share in that medicine with master facilitators from Brazil and the Unites States. Corpo Terra will provide a place to slow down, explore, discover and nurture our creative spirit. To return to our bodies and dance to the movements and songs of our ancestors. And in remembering the ways they moved, and sang and played, we can remember the way they lived; in harmony and connection with the Earth. The instructors, the land and the experience were all intentionally chosen so that after our immersion you will return to your homes and communities rejuvenated, connected, confident and alive with inspiration. Each day will offer multiple classes and activities to learn from our mentors, all rooted in a range of disciplines. Each one with decades of experience, deep knowledge and passion that they bring to Costa Rica, to come and share with you.
All music and dance activities will be held at Samanea Sactuary in San Luis, Costa Rica. Forty acres of primary and secondary cloud forest with a river and hiking trails tucked into the mountains of the world famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. It has been undergoing a process of ecological restoration since it was acquired by field biologist, restoration ecologist and educator, Karen Gordon. While we are there we will intentionally have most of our activities take place outdoors to channel all of our good energy and intentions into the land. To dance with our feet connected to the earth. To play music and sing underneath the stars and around the fire. Participants will stay in shared or private room at Rancho de Lelo Ecolodge, located directly next to Samanea Sanctuary. The Ecolodge is owned and operated by a local family from San Luis and everyday you will be nourished by their organic Costa Rican dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. All made with food sourced from local neighboring farms. There are only 4 private rooms with queen beds and the other 4 rooms have 2 double beds so space is very limited. First come first served so don’t hesitate to secure your spot!

Orixá Symbology and
Silvestre Technique Practice and Composition
Experience the expression of Orixá tradition through a connection with the foundations of the sacred. Creating space for memories to manifest through movement, sonority and the poetry of our ancestors dances. Classes will explore how symbols can open doors into movement and composition, offering foundations from which the nature of the body can express itself through dance. Discovering and honoring how. each unique and diverse body carries its own way of moving, creating and expressing.

Rhythms and Songs
Connect with your rhythmic self! Francisco has been teaching people of all experience levels how to understand, play and sing samba music for over 20 years. He is an expert at making difficult musical concepts and techniques approachable and easy to digest. He always maintains a fun and encouraging atmosphere in his classes while making sure that everyone is understanding and internalizing the music, the concepts and the rhythms. A bulk of our time will be spent playing percussion; pandeiro, tamborim, surdo, agogo, reco-reco, ganza, etc. All percussion instruments will be provided but students are encouraged to bring their own as well as any other instruments they want play for the duration of their stay at Corpo Terra. Contact Francisco for a potential loaner instrument if you don’t have the space to bring yours.

*Participants should plan to arrive at Finca Samanea in San Luis on Sunday, January 31 before 6pm. Dinner will be served followed by a short orientation and the following morning the activities begin.
*Classes are rooted in Brazilian music and dance traditions and all dance classes will be accompanied by live drums and music
